J.Crew New Arrivals: I Like One Shirt

This one:

Depressing but true, this is the only thing from the entire new rollout that I really like. I'm coming to realize that I don't like Tom Mora as a designer...he and I don't mesh well together in regards to our style sensibilities. J.Crew's unofficial tagline has always been "classics with a twist", and now it appears that the "twist" part is "ugly". Blergh. Well, here are my runners-up:
The Emma Top is the newest variation of their sleeveless silk chiffon tops like the Naomi and the Natasha. They are great tops for work under a jacket or cardi, but I'm not sure how that big ol' clown collar will fit under another layer. I might try it to find out.
One of the few knee-length dresses they offer, this Peplum Dress in Stretch Wool is pretty and on-trend (maybe even a little behind the peplum trend, actually). Fit is another story, though, and I'm not sure this is right for my figure.
I do love flannel pajamas, and these Flannel Gingham ones come in navy and fuschia. Mom usually buys me a new set of pajamas for Christmas every year, so this is an easy pick. Also, doesn't that model resemble Katie Holmes quite a bit? I think J.Crew noticed how much she wears their clothes and they're trying to reel her in for some more free publicity ;)
This Cabochon and Crystal Bracelet is different and kind of cool - you can see a better shot of the cabochons on the model in the Bracelet Header. $78.00 for resin, glass, and brass isn't a bad deal; I hope they offer it in more colors eventually.
I like this playful Enameled Fu Dog Bracelet, but I wish they had done the enamel in red or chartreuse. I think it would make a bigger visual impact. What do you think about the new line? Are you a fan of Tom Mora? Can you believe how many freaking pastels they used TWO MONTHS before the big holiday season???

  1. I don't think TM is at all imaginative, I think he just reshuffles, a sleeve from here with a body from there, and the same old collars and neck cuts. And I refuse to spend money on radioactive sweaters with short half-lives. Well, I expect we'll see some fast promos and markdowns.

    1. Agreed. Oh well, at least it will be nice to pick up all that pastel stuff at sale + 30% off come February.

  2. It's all gone so UK HIgh st, the reason I loved J Crew was to get away from all that.

    1. I know exactly what you mean. I had never been to an H&M, Topshop, or Zara before my semester in London in 2004, and it was fun to shop in those stores initially, but the bloom wore off pretty quickly for me. J.Crew's new designs do lean more in that direction.

  3. There's nothing I like not even one shirt. I did get a kick out of the fu-dog bracelet but I bought the pink elephant bracelet in July and I never wear it.
That dress is a nice shade of red but the waist looks really high. I don't know why they do that.

    1. Yeah, I noticed how high the waist really is in the picture of the black version of the peplum dress (they probably have the model in a larger size of the red dress and we just can't see where it's pinned in back). If I try to wear a high-waisted dress with a peplum it's going to look like my boobs have mudflaps. Not cool.

  4. I like the blue paisley Liberty shirt but that's about it. The plaid shirt you favor is the colors of my grade school uniform and it is intriguing for that reason but I should know enough that it won't work well with my complexion. Let us know how you like it, if you get it.

    1. I haven't decided whether I'm going to try to wait for a sale on that red/grey plaid or not...the other things (not many) that I've liked recently have sold out in my size before they hit FS. I'm glad I bought the Swiss-Dot Tippi at full price, I love it.

    1. Lucky...I'm envious of anybody who lives near a B&M since that's where you get the best deals.

  6. I am also finding less and less to love. Thank goodness.

    1. Ditto. I chugged Crewlade last year and now I think I have a bit of a hangover :/

  7. I love reading everything you write. You've gotta be a hoot in-person. There are a few things I really like based on what I briefly saw in the store yesterday. I don't trust the quality of things, though, i.e. Dream sweater. So it's very hard to get excited at full prices. It's a scientific fact that the crewlade strengthens as prices lower.

    1. Truth. In the end, you cannot argue with science.

Thank you for the compliment, Gigi :) I've always really enjoyed your blog posts so I'm super flattered that you are entertained by mine!

  8. So, I stumbled upon your site by chance, when I was searching for info on Jcrew's newest winter, line. I find myself wondering where the rest of the line is? Everything seems so sparse. Half of the items they are showing are $300-$500 tops and sweaters.

I thought they usually had more winter things by now, because I always have holiday stuff on my birthday list around Thanksgiving. However, this year I found just one piece of clothing. So disappointed. The thing I miss most is fun jammies around the holidays. I've been finding them dull for the past few years. They've gone down this serious, hipster path I'm not always crazy about.

    1. I completely agree with everything you wrote above! What happened to all of the pretty printed Merino cardis, or the cable-knit cardigans with gold buttons? I'm so confused by the direction they're heading in, and I hope it's just indicative of the new design team attempting to find their groove as opposed to a permanent shift towards the overpriced, twee, and trendy. Thanks for visiting :)
