When Final Sale Attacks

Those who shop J.Crew are familiar with the dreaded Final Sale. You can get all kinds of great things for very discounted prices, but once you check out, that's it - no returns or exchanges. You can find some amazing deals in Final Sale, especially popbacks...but you can also get burned BIG TIME. I have had great luck with shopping Final Sale when I stick to this rule: Only buy an item if you have either tried it on in the store or it's a multiple of something you already own (Schoolboy blazers, Cashmere L/S tees, etc.). Sometimes, however, I drink too much of the Crewlade and make poor decisions.

J.Crew Souvenir Dress from Summer 2011, Ikat Print in Faded Black or Chili Pepper, 100% Silk.

So this little dress popped back in the Chili Pepper colorway in my size on Final Sale, and I was immediately drawn to it like I am with most red items. A pretty Summer shift in a sweet little print, done in fully-lined silk shantung. Originally retailing for $148, it was now priced for Final Sale at $99. Not dirt cheap, but definitely reasonable for a lined silk dress in such a great color. I even loved the way that the print marched vertically up the skirt and then switched to diagonal on the bodice. The dress was also shown like this in one of last year's catalogs:

Oh, hahahahaha, don't mind me! I'm just having the most delightful time in my antique speedboat, probably somewhere in Europe. I'm having ALL OF THE FUN, so you don't get any. Toodles!

I bought the dress despite knowing what I know about J.Crew's weird fascination with high waistlines, despite the fact that most of their dresses have not fit me very well for years, despite the obvious difference between the model's upper body and my own (read: boobs). I'm sure that you can tell where this is going....

Straight to disappointment. This does not look very nice. The placement of the waistline is in exactly the wrong place for my figure. Plus, there are two little pleats at the waist that make my boobs look really long and low. I mean, gravity will eventually take them in that direction, but I'm in no hurry to speed it up.

Side view. I'm actually fine with the length - this is a play dress, not a work dress.

Sometimes adding a belt can work wonders for a dress. Not in this case, unfortunately.

All of that aside, the really fun part came when I tried to do something crazy like raise my arms while wearing the dress:

Oh yeah, that looks great. If you wear this dress, you'll have to rule out reaching for things above your waist, touching your hair, hugging, raising your glass for a toast, dancing with a partner, or dancing to any song at all where you might be asked to "Put your hands up!"

So now I have a hundred-dollar dress that I can't wear. I've gone over the options in my head, and it seems to me that I can go one of three ways:

1) Take it to a tailor and have the sleeves cut off so that I can at least wear it around on the weekends.

2) Attempt to sell it on Ebay to try to get some of my money back.

3) Turn it into a really gorgeous pillow for the bedroom.

Which option would you choose? I welcome your thoughts and opinions in the comments. Feel free to say "I told you so" in regards to Final Sale, because I deserve to hear it on this one.

  1. Omg, I KNEW this post was going to crack me up. I was just thinking about the basket-weave dress and how beautiful the color is. I've tried it on and know it doesn't really work w/my chest because of what you said -- the high waistline. I was just telling myself, do NOT buy the dress when it goes on sale, no matter how low the price goes. It will look like the band is trying to keep my chest from meeting up with my navel.

I totally feel for you & your final sale purchase. I have to say I think it's the only way we learn. I see so many ppl saying, For $X, I'll make it work. Why? Why not get things that look and feel good, not just cuz they're cheap. Always, always Google final sale items you're not sure about because you can usually find a picture. I keep a list running w/links to irl pics to regular & sale items. I often have links to bloggers who didn't put the title of the product in their post, so Google won't pull the image for you. If you want to see the dress on two others, check out Jessie and Amy.

I think if you try a minimizer bra to reposition the girls, you can make the...oh man I'm gonna say it...make the dress work. Or try to Ebay it.

  2. now you're making me nervous about the 3 orders I placed last week, except the factory items, all are final sale items and I have not seen them or tried them on in stores. Keeping my fingers crossed that they would turn out decent on me. If I were you, would try to sell it on ebay to get at least part of your money worth.

  3. LOLOL at your comment on the model in the red dress. Too funny!!! I would try eBay first, relist a few times if it doesn't sell, and then resort to crafting. I have made several hole-y cashmere sweaters into nice snoods. I try to forget how much I paid for them...

  4. Boo final sale! Have you tried calling cs to see if they will expend you the courtesy and allow a return? They did that for me once when th item didn't fit (needless to say I got a lecture from the rep, but who cares). If that doesn't work, try selling it before you resort to spending more money to make it work.

  5. I really feel for you! I just ordered the polka dot shorts today because my size popped back and I'm hoping they don't end up being a disappointment. I agree with Gigi on using a minimizer bra, I do that often so I can buy tops without sizing up for the girls. Also, why not try it with a super skinny belt and wear it up near the high waist line? or hide it all together with a cardigan + skinny belt. or maybe a denim jacket? Can you still wear it as a beach coverup? I'd say play around with it some more and see what happens before going to ebay etc. There's always the J. Crew aficionada exchange too! I hope you are able to salvage this dress somehow :) Good luck!

  6. Hilarious post! I can totally relate to the garment fail and sometimes as Gigi said, we need that moment of revelation.

I would first try to return the dress and if you have a PS ask them to help by putting a note on your account that it is OK to return. They are cracking down on FS returns but you could say that it just does not fit and if you aren't a serial FS returner it will probably work. If it doesn't work I would list on ebay because this dress probably is on someone's wishlist. There's also the JCA weekly exchange and you never know if another JCA would love to have this popback.

If none of those work then how about local consignment before putting it into the craft pile? You will probably get only part of your money and have to decide whether that is acceptable or not. And then of course, the inevitable sticky note or whatever you need to remind you to avoid the risk of final sale.

  7. Dying laughing at this post! Your caption of the model in her antique boat had me snorting out loud. Many of us have been there, alas! I agree that if you have a PS or a great SA at the store, they might let you return as a courtesy. Otherwise, I'd ebay or put it up on JCA as a first option.

  8. You've got me laughing out loud, literally!!! I agree with everyone else about trying to return the dress via your online or retail personal shopper first. If that doesn't work, then I'd try to sell it on eBay.

  9. very funny post, even though it is not funny for you:(.
i am sure you will find somebody who will buy the dress from you, because it is a beautiful dress.
i hate final sale, because here in germany is not a store where i can try,so i had to sell many items that i hated.most of the time i found somebody for it,but it is a hassle.

  10. @All: Thank you all so much for your feedback! I decided to first follow the suggestion that some of you made to call up J.Crew CS and see if I could get them to allow me to return the dress and...it worked!!! I explained about the sleeves and how they caused the entire dress to hike up under your armpits if you tried to raise your arms, and the CS rep laughed and said, "I can see why that would be a problem! I'll go ahead and process this dress as a return, just ship it back using the return label or drop it off at your nearest store." Hooray! I probably wouldn't have tried this if you all had not urged me to give it a shot, so thanks again!

    1. Oh, I am so happy to hear it Whitney!!! Now I can really laugh at your post, I was feeling your pain. It happened to me in the past and don't buy FS ever since (I was able to return too). I did try this dress on, I ordered it when it first came out and I was very disappointed, it looked exactly the same on me.

  11. Oh, and I wanted to say that I am so glad you confirm my thoughts about every JC dress being high waisted. I always thought I am short waisted but JC almost convinced me that I have some ridiculously long torso.

  12. Am visiting from Gigi's and love your style of writing!

Eek, sorry that the dress isn't working out for you - I think I'd try the eBay route. There seems to be quite a few J. Crew resellers that are selling things for higher price points than what they purchased it for so you'll probably be able to recoup what you paid.
