Reviews: Jason Wu for Target, Dresses/Skirts

If you are able to try on any of the items from Jason Wu's line for Target, I'd definitely go for the dresses. Cute patterns, fun colors, and pretty decent workmanship led me to try on more than I usually would do when shopping at Target on any normal day.

This dress, the Poplin Dress in Navy, is probably the most recognizable from Wu's line since it was used in most of the promotional magazine ads. The only sizes left for me to try were sizes 16 and 10. I tried the 10 since I'm usually an 8 in dresses, and it's not so big that you can't get a good idea of the fit in the image above. Definitely not suited for my figure, although it is longer than I expected (I'm 5'8" for reference). The waistline is too high - a problem that I often have with J.Crew's dresses. This dress would look great on someone who has a boyish figure or who is pear-shaped, IMO. Quality-wise, it's a thick, crisp, smooth cotton poplin, and all of the seams looked pretty solid (although the pleats could have used a good once-over with an iron). All-in-all a very nice dress, but not for me.

Ew! Dislike. Here is the Pleated Skirt in Black, and I wasn't a fan of the itchy and slightly sheer fabric from the get-go. This skirt was pretty awful on me, but most knife-pleat skirts are. I look like a dust broom with little skinny legs! Pass.

This is the Dot-Print Shirt Dress in Cream. The Medium was a pretty decent fit, the material is slightly stiff and just okay, and it didn't really gape at all over the bust. I liked the print and the pleats, and it honestly reminds me of the exact sort of dress that I would have worn as a teenager in the mid-90's. Cute...but not right for grown-up Whitney.

The Jersey Dress in Red/Navy Stripes feels heavenly light against the skin. They only had a Large and I was swimming in it, but I liked the fun color combination and the little touches of chiffon at the neckline, sleeves, and across one stripe at the high chest level. It was just a little too revealing over the bust area for my taste because of the thin fabric, otherwise I would look for this dress in other stores in a Medium.

Here is the dress that I ended up taking home: the Sleeveless Chiffon Dress in Navy Floral with Gold Belt. I really loved the combination of the large/small daisy patterned panels on the dress, and it is just long enough for me to get away with wearing it to work in the summer under a blazer or cardi. The belt has nothing special going for it besides its cheery yellow color, but it's easy enough to switch it out for another one, especially if I can find a slightly wider yellow belt. I took the belt out of the little woven loops in the image above because they were set up higher than my waistline, and then I'll carefully cut the loops off later.

What do you think of the dresses? Have you tried any of them on yet? I'd love to hear your opinions!

  1. Hello I came across your blog while searching for Jason Wu clothing on-line. It's nice to see what the clothes look like on a live person and not some model. I wasn't one of the people that waited in line for his clothes. But, despite most of the clothing being sold-out, I have managed to snag some pieces and one of the purses on clearance at Target. I absolutely love the Chiffon dress, it's a perfect fit and I too love the color and the little belt. I actually found one of the cardigans in the clearance rack at a local target and it goes perfectly with the chiffon dress. I also found the blue flowered, box purse too. Overall I really like his collection...very girly and I love the retro feeling of it too^^ sry for the long comment *lol*

    1. Hi cherbear! I'm glad that you found the chiffon dress to be as cute as I did :) It can be really hard sometimes to post pics of myself in clothing reviews since I obviously don't have a model's figure, but I just keep reminding myself that it's in the name of research, haha.
